The reserve is some 12 kilometres (7.5 miles) south of Winterton on the Mooihoek Road (I10) that runs between Bergville and Loskop, at the foot of Mpimbo (Arthur's Seat), a popular hang gliding and para-sailing location.
Access from Johannesburg is by highway and takes approximately 4½ hours. Access from Durban is by highway and takes approximately 2½ hours. See directions for details.

The reserve lies to the west of the Mooihoek Road with the Mtsugwana River valley running west-south-west away from the road up to the catchment area behind Mpimbo. The reserve is located at 28° 52' S, 29° 27' E and the elevation ranges from 1124 metres to 1289 metres. See Reserve Topography for more detail.
The climate of the reserve is temperate sub-tropical with the main rainfall season being December to March. Occasional rain occurs throughout the year. Rainfall is generally convectional (thunderstorms) and usually lasts an hour or so. There are some spells of cyclonic rain lasting a few days but sunshine soon prevails.
