The Drakensberg range is nearby. The Central Drakensberg (Champagne Valley) is 18 kilometres away and the Northern Drakensberg (Mont aux Sources) is 80 kilometres away. Winterton is the closest town with shops, petrol stations, post office, doctor, vet, restaurants and more. The historical battlefields route is nearby with Spioenkop 18 kilometres away and Ladysmith 54 kilometres away. Cell phone (mobile) coverage in the reserve and vicinity is excellent.
Spioenkop dam is an ideal location for boating and fishing, and is 18 kilometres away.
4x4 Trails are available at Drakensville (Northern), Sungubala (Central), Tugela River house (Winterton) and Tracks, Trips and Trails (Central)
Abseiling can be done at Drakensville (Northern), Dragons Peak Park (Central) and All Out Adventure (Northern)
Helicopter flights depart from Cathedral Peak Hotel (Cathedral Peak), Champagne Sports (Central), Drakensberg Sun (Central) and Montusi (Northern)

The renowned battlefield route passes within 25 km (Spioenkop) and many of the sites can be visited as a day trip.
